The Pittsburgh Civic Arena, built in 1961, was the worlds first sports arena to have a fully retractable roof; it covered 170,000 square feet.

It served as home to the National Hockey League's Pittsburgh Penguins as well as hosting a myriad of events including concerts, circuses, political rallies, and religious revivals. It also served as a venue for other sporting events such as boxing, basketball, figure skating, and tennis, among others.

Though state, city, and other historical organizations refused to grant the Civic Arena (renamed Mellon Arena at the time) historical status in the face of demolition, it is widely accepted that these refusals were purely political so as not to interfere with its demolition and area redevelopment plans designed to keep the Penguins in Pittsburgh.

In spite of this, this arena was a marvel of engineering and a pioneer in entertainment structural design. The 8 section dome featured 6 opening panels and had no internal struct...
